Applications of Modern Non-contact Metrology in Medical Technology

Medical components such as dental implants demand minimum tolerances to make sure that they are accepted by the body and that health is truly restored. Medical consumables such as those used for haemostasis are increasingly being coated to improve their biocompatibility. Risks to patients are thus minimised.

Absolute precision, accuracy, and zero tolerance are important preconditions for quality. On no account should checking measurements on the generally fragile objects lead to surface damage. This is where non-contact measuring systems have distinct advantages.

For use in quality control of medical technology products, ISIS sentronics has developed non-contact, non-destructive optical sensor systems for measuring layer thicknesses and 3D topographies. Inline monitoring during production is also possible.

Applications typically lie in the following areas:

  • Blister thickness
  • Thickness of coatings (e.g. of medical pouches)
  • Coating of needles and tubes
  • 3D interiors of dental implants
